The Civil War (Los DPs / Whiskey Kick – Forfeit)
After all the trash talk on his blog, Kevin Meister’s team didn’t even show up. We still don’t know how to evaluate Whiskey Kick, who in week 1 gained some kudos from Looking to Score, a team that beat them but subsequently lost to Kick in a Box. Well, WK took the forfeit but managed to eff up our power ranking, as we had prepared to topple the league standings after racking up a division record 40 runs against Meister and every one of his facial hairs. We are robots, after all.

Instead, nearly the full DP lineup, except for the people who bailed after discovering we didn’t have a real game—you know who you are—played a raucous scrimmage against each other complete with cleats and sweat and dog slobber on the classic dirt field beneath the glare of the Wednesday night lights. Beginning with the 5th-grade-gym-class-nightmare team draft—everyone lines up and waits to be picked—we engaged in a five inning scramble that served more like preseason tryouts, where team captains got to witness the DPs in action and discover what they’re really made of.
Impressive running by Grant and even more impressive running, sliding and climbing by Damon brought confidence in our pre-season pickups. Meanwhile, some questionable umping—whoever sees it, calls it—and interferences by first base coaches led to a fun, fierce victory by none other than… well, Los DPs… at least the portion that hadn’t picked up Meister and his half of the so-called human-loving Whiskey Kickers that showed up to play.
More highlights: Michele Nelson and Katherine LaNasa returned after an early season hiatus. Nelson even managed to join the Connelly tradition in pulling a leg muscle on her first day back on the field. We welcomed newcomer Kara, but also welcomed back Lehua as well as Catarina who played out-of-uniform as a prelude to her oreo-infused cupcakes for Luke’s birthday. Neil also suited up, though his kick couldn’t quite match his mobility, as he required pinch runners that never quite made it on base. And Keven Brooks kicked one of the balls into a neighbor’s yard. Don’t worry. It’s with God now.
As far as the game went, well… everybody played, we got a little exercise, Charlie’s team cheated a little. But it was the Civil War, and let’s be honest, in civil wars, there are really no winners.
Except this one. My team won. 4-3 bitches.
