Team Recaps

Hot Box
Box 17-Westside on Haitus 6. Pictured below is Corey Hogan huffing and puffing after he completed one of his two home runs for the Box!! Well done! Congrats to Mary Mitchell who scored her first career run!

The Civil War (Los DPs / Whiskey Kick – Forfeit)

After all the trash talk on his blog, Kevin Meister’s team didn’t even show up. We still don’t know how to evaluate Whiskey Kick, who in week 1 gained some kudos from Looking to Score, a team that beat them but subsequently lost to Kick in a Box. Well, WK took the forfeit but managed to eff up our power ranking, as we had prepared to topple the league standings after racking up a division record 40 runs against Meister and every one of his facial hairs. We are robots, after all.

Robot Donkey
Instead, nearly the full DP lineup, except for the people who bailed after discovering we didn’t have a real game—you know who you are—played a raucous scrimmage against each other complete with cleats and sweat and dog slobber on the classic dirt field beneath the glare of the Wednesday night lights. Beginning with the 5th-grade-gym-class-nightmare team draft—everyone lines up and waits to be picked—we engaged in a five inning scramble that served more like preseason tryouts, where team captains got to witness the DPs in action and discover what they’re really made of.

Impressive running by Grant and even more impressive running, sliding and climbing by Damon brought confidence in our pre-season pickups. Meanwhile, some questionable umping—whoever sees it, calls it—and interferences by first base coaches led to a fun, fierce victory by none other than… well, Los DPs… at least the portion that hadn’t picked up Meister and his half of the so-called human-loving Whiskey Kickers that showed up to play.

More highlights: Michele Nelson and Katherine LaNasa returned after an early season hiatus. Nelson even managed to join the Connelly tradition in pulling a leg muscle on her first day back on the field. We welcomed newcomer Kara, but also welcomed back Lehua as well as Catarina who played out-of-uniform as a prelude to her oreo-infused cupcakes for Luke’s birthday. Neil also suited up, though his kick couldn’t quite match his mobility, as he required pinch runners that never quite made it on base. And Keven Brooks kicked one of the balls into a neighbor’s yard. Don’t worry. It’s with God now.

As far as the game went, well… everybody played, we got a little exercise, Charlie’s team cheated a little. But it was the Civil War, and let’s be honest, in civil wars, there are really no winners.

Except this one. My team won. 4-3 bitches.

Whiskey Kick
Due to a forfeit last week we don’t have any game recap to report but I wanted to explain the forfeit in a language the robots of Los DPs can understand:

Summer 2011- Week 2

After an exciting opening week, we're getting ready to gear up for week 2. We had some nail-biters and we had some blow outs. Half the teams won and half the teams lost. What's going to happen this week? You'll only know if you show up. It's also a post-game night at Brennan's, so be sure to show up and extend the party.

Westside on Hiatus
In the spring of 2008, a small budding friend group decided to form an adult kickball team. On the first day, they established a mantra: What we do at the bar is more important than what we do on the field.  After three years, three league championships, and 3,000 different girls playing on the team for one season, perhaps one could look back and say:  This team never truly believed in its mantra. Because, no matter what happened at the bar, it was clear there was a decent amount of focus on the field as well.

After Westside For Life's bubble burst last season -- or, more accurately, after the bubble was popped -- the team seemed to go its separate ways. Some moved on to other cities, even ones in the rarely-seen Mountain time zone. Some couldn't handle multiple nights of kickball. Some had new wives who made it clear that their husbands couldn't handle multiple nights of kickball.

The result was a new team. Westside On Hiatus was born, containing barely a core of the franchise's previous stalwarts. New players, some who'd never stepped on the field before, made their debuts. Lineups are adjusted, fielding is adjusted, chemistry is learned and not assumed. This process takes time.

But after a 0-4 loss on the kickball field on Monday night, the mantra finally came true. As I personally stood in the stall in the men's bathroom at Brennan's, vomit spewing from my mouth into (mostly) the toilet but also partially the toe of my shoe, I realized we had fully transitioned into the team that does whatever it can on the field -- but doesn't eff around at the bar.  I also realized I needed food.

We have arrived.

The good news: the DPs won their home opener with a whopping 17-0 shutout!

The bad news:

We’re in danger of becoming a little overcocky.

Don’t get me wrong, we played well. Extremely well considering half the team had never met each other and a few were terribly distraught that their new cardinal red socks did not match their burgundy-esque T-Shirts. Clashing colors is not the best first impression to make on the ladies. Right Russell?

Despite the extreme awkwardness of meeting new teammates and figuring out what to say to each other, it only took newbie Allison about 90 seconds before she told Luke to F*ck off for the first of many times - in a flirty way - love that girl already. Good recruiting Annie!

Some of the veterans had the opportunity to meet three other newbies during a makeshift practice at the beach over the weekend, leaving the DPs with their first two injuries of the season! Bernard and Michelle both pulled leg muscles during their first at bat in practice (it’s a rubber ball people), but limped their way to the game any way. Yay team spirit! Let’s hope this doesn’t signal a return of the dedicated kickball ambulance on Wednesday nights.

We started out really strong, getting 15 of our 17 runs in the first two or three innings. This was a combination of skill - like Rob and Adam’s speedy bunt and runs, Luke’s solo home run and Dinh’s incredible base running - and luck, as Kick in a Box let us off easy with some missed catches and we had some great decisive umping by pink-clad Ninad (?).

There was a ton of heart from both teams on the wet field (we’re hoping it wasn’t all dog pee). Keven’s belly dive back to second base, Kick in the Box’s slip-and-slide run from third base into the far fence, Ray, Lori and Sarah’s quick learning curve on where to kick the ball (aided by the fact we kicked through the 15/16-man deep line-up three times). Except for Julie who refused to slide and add to her kickball scars and ended up elbowing the second baseman in the ribs, which had to hurt (sorry!!). And with 17 runs, almost everyone had a chance to score!

But our defense did rock. Matt saddled up to his first stint at first base with deference to walking cast-wearing Neil and caught everything flung his way. Charlie had a good time pegging women (gently) in their butts who bunted too short. Luke showed that his reconstructed shoulder, neck, jaw, head (am I forgetting anything?) was no hindrance to his pitching skills. Russell was running a fly ball clinic in the outfield trying to teach Steve how to catch the ball before it bounces. And Rob and Adam showed that a chest pass/peg does really work in a game.

It’s only the first game in, but there’s already talk of going ALL. THE. WAY! Of course we say that every season, so let’s not get…

Summer 2011- Week 1

Welcome Back!
The 2011 Summer season starts this week for the Dogtown League. Like the NFL, our hiatus is over and it's time to get down to business. With the merger of the Westside league, it's going to be another exciting season. Reigning champ Balls Deep is back to defend their title. Some of the teams standing in their way are Hot Box, One Kick Wonders and newcomers like Looking to Score and Find the Hole. Once again, games are on Wednesday nights and the post game bar is Brennan's.

WINTER 2011 - WEEK 9

Playoff Schedule
It's that time of year again, where the games actually matter. A new season starts as every team in the league has a chance to win it all or go home, disappointed and unfulfilled. As The Lakers proved, it doesn't matter if you won championships in the past or had a great regular season- it's one game at a time and anything can happen. Good luck to all of the teams.

Final Regular Season Standings

Game Recaps
Balls Deep vs. Hot Box

When the season schedule was released, no one would have expected tonight’s game to be a regular season statement game.  As the season progressed and the wins piled up for both teams, the weight of this match up grew to heights not imaginable for a simple kickball game. A dream match up of the two top teams in the league, the reigning champs Hot Box and the undefeated newcomers Balls Deep. A rivalry intensified by a tie in the Das Boot challenge and through the personal relationships the opposing players have with one another- from high school friends, to co-workers to siblings. As 9:00 approaches, the tension builds up as Hot Box dawns their usual black warm ups to remind the league who is still the reigning champ and taking the role of villains. Balls Deep in their baby blue shirts warm up with a quiet focus and mentally prepare for the heavy weight match up. A statement for the playoffs needs to be made tonight, and both sides know it. Striking first, Hot Box scores a run quickly and the momentum swings in their direction. Balls Deep, never falling behind all season, isn’t fazed and continue to fight on, hoping to find the breaking point in their opponents. Out after out ends each inning as defense becomes the dominating theme. Dirt, sweat and adrenaline fill the air. Frustration builds as each side looks for a weakness in the other that may or may not exist. No holding back by either side. A second run by Hot Box increases their lead, but Balls Deep is relentless and soon scores their first run. Both dugouts cheer while those on the field are quiet with determination, knowing that this game isn’t over until the final out is called. Balls are bunted and balls are kicked deep, but no success for either side. Balls Deep needs to make a move as another Hot Box run is scored. Miscommunication on the bases leads to missed opportunities. In any game that has this much meaning outside of a championship, any small error is costly. In the end, the errors would lead to the first loss of the season for Balls Deep as they could not overcome the 3-1 deficit. Both teams gain a new respect for one another, and as the 1 and 2 seeds heading into the playoffs, the next time they would meet is the championship game. If the cards fall into place, this will happen, but in the playoffs, a new season begins and anything can happen.
Editor's Note: Once again I didn't receive any pictures or recaps from teams, so this week I will be doing movie recaps.
Thor
It's summer, so it's time for all the big, blockbuster movies to start rolling out. Last week we had Fast Five, which made a crap load of money and sealed the deal for a Fast Six, with the obvious porn parody to be called Fast Sex. Thor is the first superhero movie of the year. It comes from the people who brought us Iron Man. Unfortunately, they're also the same people who brought us Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. Thor isn't your everyday superhero where he is already a god from Asdor with powers and doesn't spend half the movie either making a suit or discovering them. His backstory is that he pissed his dad off and got sent to Earth as a punishment, where he decides that he'll stay and become Earth's protector. He fights his brother Loki and a couple of other godly creations. Explosions, funny one liners and probably several references to the upcoming Avengers movie are throughout the film. The guy who played Captain Kirk's dad who died in the first 10 minutes of the movie is Thor and Sir Anthony Hopkins plays his dad. Everyone in the god realm speaks English, but with a British accent. This is common for any movie that has gods or powerful beings. It looks like this is the legacy of British imperialism where it's safe to assume that gods all originate from England because if you have an English accent, your're automatically smarter than anyone else in the room.
Something Borrowed
Somehow Kate Husdson snagged another big paycheck to star in a movie I'm assuming is based on a book written by a woman. This movie bombed and possibly cost someone at the studio realeasing it a job. Somehow Kate Hudson will get another role next year and ruin another life. I just hope she doesn't ruin Muse by dating its lead singer the same way she ruined every movie since Almost Famous, which was her only good role. This movie has it's typical girl loves a guy who she's best friends with, but doesn't have the guts to tell him so he falls in love with her female best friend. Hilarity and awkwardness ensue as she struggles with this dilemma as she tries to be supportive while struggling with her true feelings. This is a complicated tale which has never been told before, so I won't ruin the ending for those of you out there dying to see it. Ginnifer Goodwin of Big Love fame stars as the woman in distress, Kate Hudson is her man-stealing bestie, and Colin Egglesfield is the guy everyone pines for.
Jumping the Broom
Unless there's a Tyler Perry at the front, I have no interest in it. The IMDB summary for this one says : Two very different families converge on Martha's Vineyard one weekend for a wedding. Sounds like something written by Shakespeare. It also did better than the Kate Hudson movie, so it's either good or Kate Hudson is that bad. You be the judge.
WAKA on ESPN
The Mike and Mike show on ESPN is the airing of a talk show hosted by Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic. Mike Golic used to play pro football. If you still don't know who he is, his older brother is Bob Golic, who also played pro football and was on Saved By The Bell: The College Years playing the RA in the dorm everyone stayed at. Below is a video of Mike Golic talking about his experience with WAKA and his chance to throw out the first pitch at a game.
